Real-Life Heroism: CPR Saves Life at Local High School
Last month, a 16-year-old student collapsed during gym class at a high school just outside of San Antonio. Thanks to the swift action of Coach Ramirez—who had recently renewed her BLS certification—the student received immediate chest compressions while another staff member grabbed the on-campus AED. Paramedics arrived within 6 minutes and confirmed that the student’s heart had been restarted by the AED and effective CPR.
“I was nervous, but my training kicked in. I just kept going until help arrived,” said Coach Ramirez.
What Technique Was Used?
High-quality chest compression: At least 2 inches deep, 100–120 per minute
Minimal interruptions between compression
AED applied within 3 minutes of collapse
Team-based response: One person did compression, one called 911, one fetched the AED
Why This Matters
Brain damage can begin within 4–6 minutes of cardiac arrest
Bystander CPR can double or triple the chances of survival
70% of cardiac arrests happen outside of hospitals—you could be the difference
